I don't believe history/the future would ever happen like 40k portrays. I think a lot of modern sci fi and fantasy world building plays into a deep psyop about the nature of reality and the likelihood of different futures. I think the 40k world has a lot of ideas that the elite would like very much to exist, slavery, hive lords, high inquisitors, planetary governments, commisars etc.
The imperium vs the universe setting represents ultimate communism vs a Godless universe full of scary demons and fire and boob gods. The only and obvious option left is to choose the slavery to communism for safety, while worshipping the glorious leader in church.
