Aren't they the main, if not only source of income of the island? If so you're kinda screwed, I can't see a way out. How are politics there? Are there candidates that would want to reduce Cyprus' dependance upon tourism and develop other sources of income? Are the gouvernants even useful?

I dunno some people still use it, and it's true that it's what you will hear in movies, books, even jokes. It's a more traditional way, kinda part of the ''French postcard'' thing. Probably some waiters had enough of being called ''boy'' at some time and they bitched about it, because it's true that it kinda inferiorize them. You may still call them that if you want it's just not really "politically correct", it will probably just flag you as a tourist or a French "beauf" (if you've not seen this one in class: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beauf). Also if the waiter is a girl or obviously doesn't work.
