Go tell a Corsican person that he's French, he might even feel insulted even though Corsica is "french". but the descendants of the people who live there have a different identity. and simply saying this or that group is "white" is not gonna cut it.
You see, the same is true for many parts of europe / asia. Ukrainians don't necessarily see themselves as identical to let's say, Swedes, Italians, Germans, ..
The reason why the "european union" or EU, is a catastrophy, the reason why it's not really working (corruption aside) is precisely because in reality, we can't create a "united states of europe". We all have different cultures, , languages, ethnicities, history..
a Hungarian person will not feel much in common with a Romanian or Serb, Croatian..
Just like French people feel quite distant (culturally, historically) from let's say..Estonians or Austrians.
So the point remains. From your american perspective, "white" means lumping people of european origin in the same basket. But in reality things are more complicated. And this is even true on a biological level. Take the Basques for ex, (Southwestern Europeans) they're basically the descendants of early Iberian farmers. You can see if if you do a DNA test. There's a world of difference between your average Basques and what you define as "white".
The same is true for Ashkenazi Jews. You do'nt say the "yellows" when you talk about "Asians" do you ? You can make the distinction between East asians (Japanese, Koreans, Chinese) and Southeast Asians right ? You do see the difference between an Abo and a Congolese person right ?
