The modern Mexicans (those invaders) actually filled in those irrigation canals so they could build more of their shanty shit shacks. Read that sentence again- They filled in the irrigation canals so they could build their homes.
So, they had these giant temples and cities that did well until they started cutting off their own water supplies for shanty shacks to be built. They did well for quite some time using the agrarian principles taught them by the original builders of those temples. As the years of droughts came, they were fucked on their water supplies and their failure to comprehend what water storage is and the necessity of all those canals they had filled; their crops failed repeatedly for years and they died out/abandoned those temples to the jungles until only Tenochtitlan was left.
When the Spanish arrived there was hardly any left of the population due to them having just had one of these years long droughts.
These modern Mexicans were barely past the stone age in ability save their agrarian capabilities (taught to them by those builders). In fact, their abilities in metals such as gold but nothing further than gold leads one to believe that they were actually almost incapable of refining the raw materials themselves and used what had been left behind to them by those same builders of the temples.
