The Red Army was being slaughtered on the eastern front when the Luftwaffe was operational. The Luftwaffe lost its combat operation ability and air superiority because of the RAF, over Britain and elsewhere across Europe and Africa. The Luftwaffe lost over a thousand more fighters at the Battle of Britain than it did at the Battle of Stalingrad. The RAF forced the diversion of the largest Luftwaffe air flotillas from the eastern front. Before this, the Soviets couldn't reinforce their troops, they couldn't use barges across the Volga without being annihilated in the process. The Soviet counter offensive was only possible with the clear skies. Britain's RAF did a lot more to provide these clear skies than the Soviet VVS.
