If your family cannot trace their roots back to before 1789, you are not a US citizen. Period. You can live here and apply, but you have to pass the same citizenship tests as any other immigrant.
Personally, I can only trace half of my family tree to pre-1789 US. My mom's side goes back to New Haven CT @1624. My dad's people came over from Scotland and Ireland in the 1880s. So I'm half-American.
I'm guessing that only half of the "US citizens" could even pass the test to become real citizens.
