It's normal for startups or highly ambitious tech companies to be running at a loss as they ramp up and validate their business. It's called runway, i.e. the amount of time they have to "take off" before they run out of money and crash or need another cash injection from investors (diluting their ownership share).

Dunno how this applies to Twitter given it is a more established company.

That's a simplified version. Twitter is a Text based Advertising company. Their idea of economy of scale was to have 1 billion users who will eventually turn a profit from clicking on ads.

I think it's still quite popular, although not as much just a couple of years ago. Personally I only use it with the intent of finding very specific information. For example two teenagers here killed a girl a few years ago, and reporting their identity was banned because of their age. I found out who they were through twitter

Targeted advertising is working less and less as the internet grows more mature, through greater knowledge and use of adblock, better ability to tune ads out, and the harvested data used to target ads being less effective. Big sites are the ones that struggle the most because they both make the data for targeted ads and rely on targeted ads.

The purpose of twitter is to get instant news from those on the ground and to communicate/shit on celebrities. Now that it's behind a login wall (according to Musk, it's to stop AI from harvesting data), it has become less useful. Musk must really be having buyer's remorse.
