It's theoretical thinking and hard to do, but it makes sense. Before anything existed would have been a state of an infinite instant of nothingness. If the universe began then there's no reason why it wouldn't have began sooner.

You're really asking for a repetition but let's go with it anyway.
If it always existed, it has an infinite past where all potential of random chance or function had been maxed out.
Implying the universe should happen (by random chance or by function) before it happened. But it's impossible for an event to take place before it took place.
This impossibility can be avoided if the universe happened by choice, which is the only other possibility.
That's how God is a possibility, where the contrary, no God, is impossible.

You lost me on the third paragraph thing.
Before the universe was created, there was no time. The universe could not have happened “earlier” because there was no time. Time is an aspect of our universe, without our universe there is no “earlier”. The universe began WHEN it did because it’s the only time it could. At the start of time.
There were no seconds ticking away before the universe. There is no “just before” compared to “much further before” it was all outside of time.
I don’t know if there is or isn’t a god, but I do know you cannot fathom it if there is, as you cannot even fathom existence outside of our narrow little human window.

doesn't have anything to do with a perpetual universe. It never happened, it's just been.

No, his choice doesn't need to be caused to have a starting point.
He could just create the universe by choice whenever he wants. There is not starting point needed to do that for God. A choice or numbers aren't in some kind of progress.
