I worked for an area developer when cold stone creamery blew up in the early 00's. He taught me only chumps are franchisees because it's pretty much a pyramid scheme and franchisees are at the bottom. He made money from every store he opened, allot of times making more money off the store than the franchisee themselves.
Plus you have no control over products you use, and suppliers you get them from. That means you can get in trouble from corporate for something as stupid as not having the right brand of chocolate chip. These franchises keep such strict control over stores so the customer has a uniform experience no matter what store they visit.
