There's a shit ton of alternate ways to play on the 8x8 and suggestions for 10x8 with new characters, etc. They didn't sell as well because 8x8 is already complex enough to give people a lifetime of content. The joke would be a little better if you asked when is Chess 35 coming out? There's probably more that 35 other variations but you get the idea.

Anyway, what Chess did very right that few other games have done is make every piece able to one shot every other piece in some way. Almost every other game you play you quickly discard all the weapons and skills you used on the early game and then again as you transition from the mid to late game. No so with chess. If it hasn't been killed off, it is still in play and can still deliver a one shot. This is why the game has been around so long.

your progress relies on memorization skills, not reacting or predicting opponent's moves
launch any chessmaster PC game and set it to "hardest difficulty" - wham bam you'll never win

I went as far as "solving" chess puzzles or analyzing unusual matches but overall it is a huge waste of time and skills gained through chess practice don't really translate to any other competitive activity or life skill

In a recent game between Carlsen and Anand, a knight was "worth" more than a queen, because had he promoted to a queen, it would have resulted in a certain stalemate assuming perfect play, whereas underpromotion to a knight bagged him the victory.

"Miracle of game design" I'm not usually rude to people for no reason but you clearly have no understanding of chess lol. The nominal worth of a chess piece is a total fiction, otherwise it would be difficult for algorithms to decide what moves to carry out. Computers assign pieces a certain value so that the minimax algorithm can assign certain values to different combinations of moves and then select the best one

Never was a tabletop guy, so I never bothered touching it, even online.
