It's not merely a case of what the word was used for in the past and what it is used to represent today although that is at least some of the picture. Trying to reduce the issue down by merely calling it a semantics is missing the point because if the meanings behind the words change and the words themselves change and even the languages and even the letters that they use change as they are copied and translated and mistranslated, it's not merely a semantic issue anymore, its a fundamental understanding of meaning.

That's NOT semantics.
This thing that I call the "definition shell game" can be seen even today with almost any word of cultural significance from words like "socialist" all the way down to very fundamental and basic words like "woman".
