American anons what's the difference between a Sheriff and a regular police officer?


I always assumed from what I saw in Western movies that a sheriff is like a boss of the local police station and that some places in America simply kept that old archaic name to keep with the tradition of the Old West, cowboy hats and all that but I am not su sure anymore.
