I recommend talking with your wife about working together to encourage focus away from sonic the hedgehog. Sonic is fast, a lot of sports are fast paced. You could present the sports as being something sonic would love doing, and gradually try to increase their interest in the sport for the sport rather then being like sonic. Practicing safe, non collision sports with them in the yard would be a great idea.
