Growing up, my mom (bless her heart) would at least mash potatoes instead of using instant. But her food was always so bland and a chore to eat. I'm not sure why someone wouldn't do some simple basic things to give flavor to food.
When she tasted my cooking years after I moved out she was offended and immediately inferred that I must have hated her cooking while growing up.
Things are a cycle though eh? If I had children and raised them on my cooking they would probably develop a taste for bland and processed food in contrast.
