>>18686223here's the problem with bulgarian. your analysis of slav languages is correct, if flawed and meme-ridden, like everything the languagesimp guy says.
yeah it's true we have no cases so the grammar could seem easy at first. but the grammar has hidden depths, in the form of grammar moods
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammatical_moodbut even if that weren't true, bulgarian has a very annoying feature where in there's tons of dialect and nobody seems to speak the textbook language. so if you learn it by textbook, we'd all be able to understand what you say, but you won't be able to understand what we say.
i'd recommend you bite the bullet. russian pronunciation is a bit more tricky than bulgarian at first, but russian pronunciation is way closer to textbook russian than bulgarian is to textbook russian and russian has close to no dialects.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_dialectsas for mutual intelligibility, you're probably best off learning serbian so you can go to all the yugoslavian countries since slovenes and macedonians are used to hearing serbian. croatian and bosnian is of course the same language. based on my experience bulgarian helps with understanding other languages but nobody else seems to understand us.
so tl;dr, you're best off learning russian. the grammar is hard but the speaker pool and media (tv shows and music) pool is the best and the pronunciation isn't as difficult as it would seem.
let me know if i've failed to clarify anything for you.
