For men, they don't need to carry a purse (or, at least, didn't in the past); because their standard of wardrobe, the suit, had several pockets

Fast forward, and for economy reasons they mostly did away with inside pockets; and some even go as far as to sew a flap on the waist to look like a pocket, with nothing underneath.
