I feel the same way. I couldn't do something tawdry with you because I'm not le gay anymore. I hate people in general. Some are okay but I keep a close circle of good people I like. There's nothing wrong with doing the same. You're right that it only takes one so you have to be careful but you also have to be mindful of who you're letting help you. You wouldn't want them to teach you the wrong things even if they have good intentions.
I think you struggle with socializing formally because of your self awareness and intelligence. Smart people often don't have many people they connect with.
Maybe now is the best time to build your circle.
