Hey OP, help me understand the evolution of the concept of hell in Christian theology. Prior to the 12th century it was cannon that death was simply a long sleep prior to judgement, at which point you were either judged to be fit to live close to God in the afterlife or not, then somewhere along the lines Christian dogma absorbed the belief system of Mesopotamia and Egypt where the human soul is judged at the moment of death and assigned either Hell (Hades) or some paradise. Another confusing detail is how Christianity has evolved yet again and the presiding dogma is that there is no punishing hell, rather that your proximity to God in the afterlife is tied to your behavior in this life.

Soul sleep has never been the doctrine of the church at large. Luther toyed with it briefly but backed down when literally everyone on all sides talked him out of it. The "via media" (the idea that dead believers' souls go to heaven) has always been the orthodox belief of the church and is supported by Scripture, especially the scene in Revelation which explicitly shows the souls of the martyrs in heaven.

Okay great so by what authority do you get these doctrines from?
How do you know which books are in the bible?
Why does Christ give the apostles the ability to forgive sin? For no reason? And why do you believe Christ built his church on the foundation of 1 man and the gates of hell shall never prevail against it but then abandoned his church anyway? This would mean Christ lied in the bible, and built the church for no reason or was unable to protect it
Also why would I trust your flavor of schism and not Jim Bob's down the street at his church next to the TGI Friday's and TJ Maxx? You both seem to have the same level of authority over interpretation of God's word (zero)

Here we see Jesus asking Peter who he believes Him to be.

Peter answers correctly that Jesus is the Christ.

Jesus affirms the correct response stating on this truth shall be the rock on which the church would be built.

He isn't calling Peter the rock on which the church would be built.

The context is clear as crystal.

The sheep need to have the ability to reform around the voice of their shepherd. God's word is truth (John 17:17), and as the Word incarnate, Jesus himself is truth (Jn. 14:6).
