No, well not exactly. The problem comes from the legalistic point of view prevalent in latin which unfortunately poisoned the theology of the West. Simply put sin is an ontological trespass, not a simple legalistic error. God became man, so man can become as God. Also Christ has 2 natures. He is both fully human and fully divine. His human (created part) prayed and His divine (uncreated part) answered. Christ is the image of the cosmos. The entirety of everything is the Uncreated and the Created. Christ is both. What we call God is simply the uncreated nature. Unironically angels are closer to us than God. That's why the incarnation is such a big deal. The world entire is manifested. By God taking up the cross and dying for our sins so do we need to carry our cross and follow Him. In that way we can hope to be as Him and be saved (simply being as Him with Him as He intended).

The most sense I could make of it was, if you are sinning( being
lazy or just enjoying yourself too much, beeing greedy...) the future
will be horrible.

you have to sacrifice the present( working towards something)
to not be miserable or even good in the future.

i read it as a metaphorical guide of how to conduct yourself in the world. but the metaphores are 2000 years old.
