Fedora is good. Mint is also good.
Both in most cases, just werks.
Trick is not to upgrade to latest-and-greatest. Stay a bit behind, so new bugs got discovered and fixed by other people, while your workflow is not disturbed.

If you work in IT, then Linux is nice to have. If use domain specific applications, like PhotoShop, CAD or plethora of others, remain on Windows, and try to ignore that pride flag in June.

I've installed Mint for a couple of computer illiterate people

Had problems with installing Mint on AMD machines. For some reasons, mint out of the box did not liked those. And for those, used Fedora.

For Intel machines, Mint with Mate, and works good-enough.

I used to install Slackware from source, and occasionally recompile my kernel. It's a good feeling.
I'd shave everything back to a bare minimum, which is a pain if you ever get a new network card or anything requiring something different.
It helped because the hardware I had was pretty skank. Compilations that ground on for 2 or 3 days at a time were a thing. Freebsd was the logical next move.
