The North wanted to limit slavery to the states where it currently exists, which means that future states that were added to the union would be free states. This meant that the slave owning South's future political power would be diminished since there would be more free states than slave states. That's why they seceded. In the early days of the war, the North had no intention of freeing slaves. They wouldn't even take black volunteers into their army. It wasn't until circumstances changed in the middle of the war that they abolished slavery and started recruiting black soldiers
