Day 15 for me.
Almost had to go to rehab.

I'm worried about my social life. Everything revolves around alcohol. I've read on some sober forums of guys having their girlfriends leave because they didn't have the same fun lifestyle they used to. Worried about dating too.
Feeling a lot better though.

Dude I wish I was worried about my social life, I got to the point where I was 31 and would mostly just game or watch movies alone with at least 2 24 ounces a night, or 4-6 beers and maybe a shot. Feeling so shitty and dehydrated only drinking coffee and work and then switching to beer right when I'm off. I look and feel like a zombie. Feel better just skipping last night but I don't count yesterday because I chugged a warm beer by my bed right when I woke up. That's when you know you're being a scumbag

I don’t understand how people can become addicted to alcohol. It’s fun to drink socially, I suppose, but I always feel like shit the next day. The hangover and expense just isn’t worth it, not to mention what it does to you physically. It’s not hard to quit. Just don’t go to the store to buy it. That simple.

I was an alcoholic for all my 20s. Wasn't until my 30s when I started getting hospitalised and going through bad detoxes on the regular that my family put up the money to get me into a really nice rehab for 28 days. It only took that to get me sober and its been years now. It wasn't the therapy that did it, it was just knowing my family had put up that money even though it was a lot for them. If I ever think about picking up a drink I imagine how shit it would be to ruin that gesture from them and that's enough to keep me from relapsing - I don't even go to meetings.

Nobody really knows what causes addiction, not even the "experts" and all the therapists. Not even addicts really know. It hits different people for different reasons, it's all a mystery really.

But fundamentally it is all about willpower and the want to stay sober. It's why I can't deal with the AA shit where they give themselves over to a higher power. It's why SMART (self management and recovery training) is the fastest growing recovery program in the world because it does away with the spirituality and focuses on willpower and how to handle triggers as they come on a daily basis.

Only advice I can give is that you just have to learn to accept that life can be really boring and that some days you will feel like shit. It's normal, everybody does. It's tempting to fill the days with an addiction because the drugs really do help, but do a cost-benefit analysis and remind yourself of where the drugs will always inevitably take you because it's never worth the payoff when you're an addict.

Accept you aren't like normies who can have some drinks on the weekend and call it a day. For the rest of your life you can just never touch a drink again, and that's fine. Remind yourself that alcohol is poison after all, and BTW watch the weight drop off you when you stop drinking and feel your mind and body recover and enjoy that each day. Also watch your savings go up.

One day at a time.

How do you guys even have time to drink? I work till 6pm, drive 40 minutes home, have a protein shake, get to the gym by 715, leave by 845, get home by 9, make dinner, shovel it down, go to bed by 11, and do it all over again M-F. I couldn’t squeeze in drinking if I wanted to.

Also, it isn't that hard to hide your drinking when your life is all about your addiction. Alcohol for breakfast to keep the shakes away, stash some in the bathroom at the office and take regular bathroom/drink breaks, hit the real drinking after work. Repeat every day.

You're still young enough that it's not too late. Most people I met in rehab for alcohol were a lot older than me when I went at 33.

If you do go to meetings I would recommend NA (narcotics anon), not AA. AA is full of old geezers, NA is a much younger crowd so you'll fit in more.

It doesn't matter if you're just into alcohol, NA takes everyone and alcohol is a drug just as much as coke or heroin.

Been drug and alcohol free since March 2022 (drug tests). It's nice saving so much money now, but honestly it's so boring. It's not fun being sober if I'm to be completely honest here. 6 more months of this and then I can at least have a few beers after work. Not going back to the drugs though.

Drinking is being lazy. If you don't drink you're in this weird kind of fiendish depressed state. I used to know the opening and closing time of every liquor store near me. How long it took to walk there, exactly what I was going to buy depending on how much I was drinking (weekday vs. weekend). I used to measure out boxed wine in a protein shaker so I knew how many units I was drinking based on what time my meetings were at work the next day. Being an alcoholic requires a lot of planning and mathematics, its all you think about.

You are right in that it is ultimately down to your own will power. But once you get deep enough to where you get shakes and panicked anxiety it can be tough. I used to bolt awake at 5am sweating and drink some of my bedside wine to hopefully get back to sleep. Had 2 beers in the morning before work. Beers at the pub on my lunch break. Bar on the commute home. Drinks at home. Repeat.

I was a 20 year alcoholic that quit almost cold turkey with Kratom substitution which was a blessing at the time, I would get the five o'clock shakes. But that led to a decade long kratom addiction (yes I am old). Now I am two months off Kratom. That was a month of fucking hell to quit. Not quite Heroin bad, but bad.

The best therapist I met in rehab was an old veteran from the Falklands war. He drilled it into me that whatever you're doing with your time, so long as you're sober that day just tell yourself "at least I'm not drinking". Different people take different things away from rehab or group meetings, but it is usually always a very simple saying that just clicks with you and helps keep you sober. This one keeps me enduring the monotony and boredom of life.

If you consider being anxious and feeling a little dizzy withdrawal, then I guess you're right, but that's the only thing I've felt. It only happened on the third day in the morning, then it went away after I ate. If you have a day of light srinking before you quit, your chances of having any withdrawal symptoms goes down.

Good man. I quit a while back after twenty years almost of heavy drinking and smoking and never felt before after a week or two. Sleep like I used to do when I was young now and no panic attacks. I can even have the occasional shot here and there on a special occasion without feeling need to keep drinking until I pass out.
It'll take some effort but you'll get there. Just wean off it for a few days and then stop and don't look bad.
You have a lot more free time when you're not drinking so remember to fill it with something.

I think it's counter-productive to give yourself ultimatums like that and it would be better to think that you are person that will not drink (you could), but a glass of wine in social setting will not destroy your entire progress. Zero tolerance on quitting something is very difficult to maintain, and you will feel like shit if you fail. You may not have that one drink, but I think it will be a lot easier. When I got over my detox and rehab I came out and hoovered up sugar so I didn't lose weight at first. Eventually my body calmed down though and I stopped getting cravings and only then did I start to lose the booze weight.

I was at a shithole rehab detox near the east side of Cleveland because insurance covered it. Been sober since July 19. Was literally like a jail because there were people who I talked to fresh out of prison or jail, with ankle monitors etc. & they said the place we were at was worse with one exception being that we got smoke time in the yard. Homeless people, aggressive folks & tons of hood black people. I was cool with most of the guys there but that shit sucked. Ironic thing is that they switched it to an all male facility after some girl got raped by a staff member 2 weeks before I arrived. Sex would always happen in the parts of the building you can sneak around in...I missed out big time on the bored horny girls who were looking for flings.

That rehab got me hooked on gabapentin for my anxiety attacks, in these past few days I cut down to 2 a day instead of 4 & it's rough. I am taking kratom for now until I am off the gabapentin then I am quitting all of it because I feel brain fog constantly from this gabapentin crap, it helped with my anxiety but its counterproductive. I said hell no to the Buspirone and any SSRI stuff I don't need a psychotic break down, no thank you

It is hard to find weed with high CBD content and low THC, unless you can grow yourself. That is the shit I grew up with, and it is 100x more enjoyable. Even the Maui Wowie stuff from 30 years ago was like 12% THC at best.

Don't go to a free rehabilitation detox unless your withdrawal takes you there. They are some real cesspits and the nurses are just there to stop you medically croaking from the major withdrawal symptoms. I honestly and truly believe many of you if younger can do it without. The thing is, these places are more just detox anyway. They don't give you any skills for dealing with it outside, and 70% of people there are forced to and fail anyways. Quit that shit. I'm 2 years sober at 35. I am a real alcoholic. I had some fun in my 20s but in reality I was always the drunkest, most sloppy, embarassing one of any group. Usually I wouldnt even make it to the bar, Id just get way too blasted at the pre drink. Fast forward to my early 30s and I am weary of embarassing myself in public so my solution was to get wasted alone on the weekends almost every weekend. The hangovers were hell.

Sobriety is shit though. At time I desparately want that beautiful cold relief that a beer brings. But its a false relief.

Best thing to do is join AA and avoid the retards there and stick with good people (there are some). Its a bit of a cult but there is some good there and its good to build some community with people strugglign with the same shit.

I started on 300mg gabapentin x2 a day, bumped it to 3x a day for midday anxiety. When I got home my doc bumped it to 4x a day so 1200mg a day. The past week has been getting it down to one in the morning & one before bed but I’m starting to run low with no refills so tapering is not an option until I speak with a new doc. I only took 300mg in the morning yesterday & didn’t take it before bed I slept like shit even after I popped a seroquil (rehab gave it to me too, I barely take it unless I genuinely can’t sleep). 50mg Hydroxyzine (vistaril) used to work for me when I quit the first time to fall asleep but it doesn’t work the same anymore. I might go to a psychiatrist for some non invasive anxiety pills to help me out & wean me off everything. I won’t ever drink again after reminding myself all the bull shit that comes with it lol. GABA worked for me but the brain fog sucks & has made me functionally regarded according to my friend

Unfortunately I find the gaba anxiety medication are the only ones that work for me. They'll likely prescribe a SSRI which won't do much for you since a gaba imbalance is causing you issues not serotonin
