You need to calculate yourself (or via an accountant) how much taxes you have to pay, even though your government knows how much you have to pay because you get in deep shit if you don't pay the right amount. We just get a letter that says exactly how much the government wants from us. No accountant or any headache-inducing calculating needed.
But yeah other than that it's pretty similar.
