>>19239478I will try to summarise what happened with Brexit in my country as its clear to me some Euros dont understand the full breadth of the situation.
A lot of it actually doesn't have a whole lot to do with the EU specifically, moreso reactions to things that the EU was doing which at the time were used by the Government to offload their failings onto the EU.
It should be noted that the Brexit vote was almost wholly brought about due to our current government woefully failing at managing immigration levels. People from the 'far right' if you can even call it that, people like Farage etc who existed on the periphery of politics rightly pointed out that it was becoming too much and began criticising the Conservative government for not actually doing what they were voted in to do.
The Conservative government as it usually does, blamed the EU mostly for this and at the time it was hard to argue with it, they had just shit on countries like Poland and Hungary for not taking their 'fair share' and there was that argument with Italy's budget and financing going on too. The EU was painted as an overbearing and controlling, and the British public felt that these migration policies were one cause of our situation we were in. Then you had Farage who I think made a grave error, he went full on with Brexit and leaving the EU because of it, and this was in large part due to his disdain with the current party mismanaging the country when he should have focused on taking them down rather than rashly leaving the EU. David Cameron (who is now back in government I should add) was a staunch remainer, as were most of the Conservatives. It was not until fairly recently that the Conservative party changed their tune and started pretending they ever gave a shit about Brexit, before Boris they were EU loving federalists for the most part. cont -
