Romania and Bulgaria may be allowed into Schengen.

>Austrian chancellor Karl Nehamer has reportedly agreed to stop vetoing Romania's entry into Schengen in negotiations earlier this week. The country may be allowed to join the Schengen airspace in early spring next year and have its terrestrial borders linked by October.

all Central/Eastern European EU countries is based solely upon foreign investments. If a German car factory is built in Romania, it isn't built in Poland or Hungary then, so Romania wins and Poland/Hungary lose. We compete with each other for investments all the time. If trucks from Romania can reach Germany faster, because they don't get stuck at border crossings, it increases Romania's competitiveness and decreases ours comparatively. This is against our interests.

Schengen matters very little for immigration, being forced to show your passport at the border check certainly doesn't discourage Romanian citizens of whatever ethnicity from emigrating to the west, if they want it.

Schengen is mostly important for trade because that's where even small delays might decrease your competitiveness.

Im deeply into FDI tracking and border wait times are take miniscule share in total revenue/profits especially in big companies that are mostly creation of FDI. Car company will just use train and it doesnt bother too much with border crossing problem. EU membership is important, Schengen is just symbolic step. It won't make a country rich but it definitely helps. Look up unemployment rate across the country, it's 2% in Győr-Moson-Sopron and it is 6.7% in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén. Even within Eastern Hungary, the cities that get foreign investment (Nyíregyháza, Debrecen) are so much nicer than the cities that do not

Exact same arguments are being made here. Liberals oppose opening factories and industry in general. Meanwhile they are also opening and operating plants in countries like Germany and France.
Plenty of problems and concerns with factories and industries but it definitely helps developing countries. Tiszaújváros (a smaller, industrial city the not so developed in North-Eastern Hungary) looks so much nicer and is so much better than Miskolc, the 4th largest city that is situated next to it, because the latter had an exodus of industry.
Industry-heavy areas with less unemployment and more FDI always look better, even if the FDI do not directly translate to economic output increase to the same extent

Yeah there have been a lot of battery related investments here, the planned CATL factory in Debrecen is the largest battery related investment in Europe with over 7b euro. I'm not sure how is this going to work out though, in terms of environmental concerns, foreign workers, etc. there are a lot of concerns. The only people sanctioned by Schengen are honest entrepreneurs who just want to export their stuff, that included ethnic Hungarians in Romania who want to get their food product into Austria and Hungary, but can't because of the border being blocked by controls

There is a place for FDI in development but going all in on it is massively retarded and pretty much guarantees that the country won't develop its own domestic industry and gets stuck in the middle income trap forever. Which is exactly what's happening to us.

I still seeth on this. I used to track that investment on our specialised forums. Now i cope we never actually had chance to get it. Slovakia cucked us for Volvo plant. Still we recently got some high tech stuff like Siemens tram factory, Chinese CNC machine factory, EV motor factory (the biggest EV motor factory in Europe worth 750 milion euro). Dont be concerned too much. Battey making is high tech. There will likelly we chinese construction and initial workers but as things normalise hungarian nationals will replace all the chinese. Same happened in serbian Smexerevo steel mill and happends in our copper mine (chinese company literally said they are working on reducing china national menager presence in favour of serbian menagement)

Developing your own industry is overrated. You can see how it is failing where the government is trying to create a monopoly or become a major force in industries like railways or telecommunications. Look at the Serbian railway development for example. Chinese built the track, DB Systemtechnik oversaw the engineering and implemented the train control system. As a result, they have a high-speed like with complex viaducts, tunnels and a grade separated line. Now look at the absolute clown show that is happening on the Hungarian side. Straight line, flat terrain, goes absolutely nowhere, Chinese can't implement the EU train control system, whole thing is a complete disaster.
We don't have the expertise and experience in these fields, it is just burning money and ending the market competition when the oligarchs get to do every work. And yet they pay a fraction of the wages compared to western countries. How are we going to get similar wages? That's the middle income trap. You seem to think just increasing the number of skilled workers to serve foreign companies is the solution, whereas making labour more abundant only makes it cheaper. The only way to increase wages is by creating high value added jobs, creating a demand for those workers. Transnational companies tend to keep the highest added value processes of the value chain in their home countries. You need domestic companies that have an active interest in keeping the highest value added jobs at home, driving the wages up. Of course they need to be technologically intensive, export oriented industries not whatever Mészáros and co are doing, but that's an entirealy different discussion.

You need more of companies that will make others pay western wages. Also HU has higher product complexity index than some western countries. I mean nigga in Serbia Brose pays 1600 euro net average in its Pancevo factory, chinese ICE turbocharger factory pays 1300 euro net average wage in Novi Sad factory. Nidec will probably pay more than these. In Hungary they pay better than that even
