Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer, led the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe from 1519 to 1522,magellan, sponsored by the Spanish crown, set out to find a westward route to the Spice Islands (Moluccas) in modern-day Indonesia.Magellan navigated through the dangerous waters of South America, discovering the strait that now bears his name, the Strait of Magellan. This allowed his expedition to enter the Pacific Ocean.Magellan reached the Philippines, where he became involved in local conflicts.
Magellan was killed in the Battle of Mactan on April 27, 1521, during a skirmish with indigenous forces led by Lapu-Lapu and gets beheaded.Despite Magellan's death, the expedition continued under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcano. The remaining ships sailed across the Indian Ocean, around the Cape of Good Hope, and eventually back to Spain.
