i'm not making excuses, just telling it how it is. i'll never forget hanging out with my friend Treyvon, going down to bourbon street (his third time being there despite growing up just a few miles away, because he never left Hollygrove). it was impossible for him to travel anywhere without a gun. it would have been like asking a Marine in 2004 Fallujah to travel outside the green zone without a weapon. just not even considered as a possibility.
we live in a big world, but within this big world there are a lot of smaller worlds and each small world has its own rules and codes to follow. the rules of the young black male American world often involve staying strapped at all times because if you see an opp it's on sight.
