Contemporaries called it simply Rus.
All sorts of prefixes Novgorod, Kievan, Moscow, Vladimir Russia etc was developed by the professors of universities of the Russian Empire so that students could better orient themselves in the epochs of their country. Because in itself epochs of Russia it is set of different mixed up events, one only internecine war with 250 important influential persons what costs.
If your Russian history textbook does not start with an explanation of this, and the author occasionally uses the term Kievan Rus' outside the epoch, then this textbook is crap and should be thrown out.
