It probably helps with not applying more than necessary. Applying it with hand wastes a lot. Maybe it's kind of a tradition too, the first versions sort of required you to use a brush.
But I never felt the need for it either, so maybe you are right, it's faggotry

applying with your hand saves up a lot though, just put a bit on your hands and lather it on your face, no need to put in a little bowl till its enough to cover the brush like in barbershops
