Survivorship bias, people work hard and they are lucky enough to make it and wonder why others are failing. So they conclude that they aren't working or trying hard enough.
Expecting people to help themselves, expecting fat people to lose weight, expecting the mentally ill to fix themselves. It would be like a human expecting a wounded animal to fix itself. Clearly people are overestimating how much individuals can do for themselves. Because of that, because of the idea that we somehow think we can all save ourselves and manage ourselves. The ones with good lives will live in a positive self reinforcement and those with shitty lives will live in a negative reinforcement lives. The only realistic solution is proper outside intervention
