If I were you I'd move in a heartbeat. Canada may be safer but I absolutely HATE the cold.
I'd go to one of the warmer states ASAP.

St Louis is okay if you're making money. The cost of living in general is lower than other cities of the same size. I lived there for ten years starting in the late '90s and was able to buy a house in a quiet neighborhood outside of the city for a reasonable price. It has the same problems that all big cities does. So you just stay away from riot-prone areas and as far away from the River as you can afford to.

If you haven't been here before, you will be stunned by how suffocating the Summer can be. Also, it's parochial to an extreme. When you meet someone they will ask you what High School you went to. If you tell them you just moved from Canada, they will treat you like a visitor from Australia or another planet.

I moved to the West Coast about 15 years ago. I lived northwest of the city back when. Bevo seems to be Little Bosnia now so you'll fit right in. Used to be a rough part of town, but maybe they cleaned it up some.
