That's a stretch. Some norsemen settled in the already populated east, sometimes mixed with the R1a carrying slavic speaking locals and created a state of doubtful connection to Russia, another country of predominantly R1a slavic speaking slavs.

The ancient culture is undeniably nordic - especially the closely similar pagan religions, shared burial rites (as documented by arab silk road merchants visiting rural areas), architecture, and the fact that pre-christian slavs wrote in norse, which was also the court language of many princedoms.
It is historical fact after all, that it was swedish adventurers that formed many of the first slavic states.

I haven't read much about it, but keep in mind there were actual norsemen living in that area, maybe they left those behind or organized the architecture, not the slavs.
Slavic languages diverged from the group germanic languages would later arise from during the bronze age, around the time ancient Egyptians were building pyramids, more than a thousand years before germanic languages even existed, and they've been carrying R1a (instead of I1 like the Varangians) for more than 4 thousand years now. Even Finns or Balts don't look the same as nordics, why would Russians?
