Dialup was literally unusable, which didn't matter because software was a damn lot better.
Broadband didn't exist widely until 2003, and by widely I mean anywhere,
but there was no real transition into it. During 2002, everybody had CompuServe
then, the very next year, everybody who could afford it switched to broadband Motorola SurfBoard
(everybody could afford it).
Dialup was everywhere during 2002 then suddenly during 2003 broadband was everywhere,
unless you were really poor:
