If you are commuting then automatics are for you, they require less effort to drive so stop-start traffic jams or having lots of traffic lights or hills to cover is way easier in an auto, your left foot doesn't get tired working the clutch. In fact, on long drives you left foot might even go to sleep, especially with cruise control and adaptive cruise and lane assist and emergency braking, a modern auto practically drives for you. You can play with your stereo and make phone calls and talk to your passengers and it affects your driving skill less.
If you are going for a drive, as in you are going out to specifically enjoy the experience of driving, then you want a manual. Manual cars require more skill and concentration. You can't really drive one carelessly and the skill ceiling is higher: clutch control, rev matching, left foot braking, throttle steering, weight shifting: these are all things you can learn that are almost useless in an automatic car. Older manuals also have more steering feedback and chassis noise, letting you physically feel the road with you hands and butt, making you more in tune with the entire process of driving, rather than just commuting.
In an auto you are only accelerating, braking and steering, the car figures out the rest. In a manual you have to figure out everything yourself. And having to learn these extra skills generally makes you more in touch with your vehicle and the road, making it less a thing you sit in on the way to work and more like an extension of you and something you do for fun.
DCT's are an automated manual, most give you control of when to shift, some even rev match, but their time to change gear is measured in milliseconds. This makes them good for sports cars because they require less effort than a true manual and rich cunts can pretend they are good at driving.
CVT's suck and are not fun to drive.
