It involved whipping the victim with a leather whip that had metal balls, bones, or spikes attached to it. The whip was called a flagrum or a flagellum, and sometimes had a hook at the end, earning it the name of scorpion. The victim was forced to bend over, exposing their back, shoulders, and waist to the lashes. The whip would tear the flesh, causing severe bleeding, pain, and shock. Sometimes the internal organs would be exposed or damaged. The number of strokes was not limited by law, and some victims died from the scourging. The scorpion was often used as a preliminary torture before crucifixion, to weaken and humiliate the condemned person.
