Small brains will just see it as brutal and edgy.
Big brains will see the underlying philosophical questions being posed.
Of course, the gore is horrific and over the top as is typical of anime, but the plot centers heavily on the concepts of survival, friendship, loyalty, and pursuing your dreams at tremendous personal cost.
It also addresses how idealistic notions of morality and justice go out the window when shit hits the fan.
It's a very thought provoking anime overall.
