This isn't exactly true. /b/ split off from /a/ because /b/ used to be the anime board, but because it was also a random board it was mostly filled with anime jokes and shitposts instead of discussion. Animefags wanted a board specifically about anime discussion so they didn't have to wade through shitposts and jokes so /b/ stopped being Anime/Random and just became a general random board and /a/ was created.

Are those no longer cooking, runescape, or body-building forums? 4chan is a website for hobbyists who generally like Japanese things to discuss Japanese things and non-Japanese things with people who like Japanese things.
