Could be better. In the last few years it has been falling behind the rate of population growth and with baby boomers hitting old age we have a large elderly population in need of home support which is poorly funded right now and being run by private healthcare providers the service delivered is below average due to the workers being paid less then a teenager at McDonalds due to the management soaking up all the funds provided by tax payers.

In short it is going to be shit when I'm old and I'll probably just get a tank of nos and plastic bag and commit at 70 if shit continues on this path.

Mostly taxes funded + additional insurance for some.
Get us mostly "free" healthcare, including medication, not including things like advanced dentistery or eyeglasses.

While not strictly free (as no one pays anything), it reduce the individual medical costs when they are expensive and permit access to healthcare to people who could not have get it otherwise.

Yeah, however it does keep costs lower for us in a darwinian way in that the only people who get insurance also pay into the system. It's the healthcare equivalent of "if you don't work you don't eat." We've always been an individualistic nation though so I think a lot of our system is just leftover from that
