Sounds to me like the other person has really high expectations of how he/she wants to be able to entertain you and keep you engaged. They worry that you feel you wasted your time with them and could have been doing something better. This person has extremely low self-esteem.

this is what i thought. But it was so out of the blue i thought i perhaps offended him and he was acting strangely.

DESU, coming from a person who's been on the other side of that conversation, if they continue to act like this, just reassure them you enjoy them for them, and they don't need to resort to actively trying to impress you a hundred percent of the time.

Someone is real spooked that you don't think much of them, and I think this comes from low self-esteem, they feel the world doesn't think much of them, and fear that because they care so much for you, they'll have to make up for all the "shortcomings" of themselves by being some impressive, brilliant, smart, [insert positive adjective here] person to impress you.
