Why do Indians play in poop? Like, what is the cultural significance of smearing literal, actual feces all over your body? Is smelling like a used diaper a critical component of Indian culture?

I bathe regularly and go out of my way to not come into contact with poop, so it's all very hard to make sense of as someone on the outside looking in.
