They made some improvements to the base story as well, to make it more suitable for film, which are adequate changes, but it doesn't really do justice to the books. It might be impossible to translate the material any better into a Hollywood movie.
Naturally The Hobbit is way worse, but so it the book, being a children's novel and predating the complexity LOTR later developed.
