I don't know of studies showing gay guys can become straight, but I know plenty of examples of straight guys turning gay (just look at any prison population), so I don't see why it can't go the other way.
Homophobia is a natural, pro-social defense against homosexuality as well. However, I think measured amounts of it are best, as literally hanging the gays doesn't make the world better. It merely makes people live in the closet and rise up in politics, due to their vulnerability to blackmail.
