Has Americans changed in anyway that would otherwise be a blind spot from our perspective or have they generally stayed the same? Or has Americans changed from say, before 9/11?

I've been to california and hawaii this summer
most of the people seemed very fake, super jolly and shallow, everything is amaaazing
everyone is loud in an obnoxious way, always trying to bring the limelight to themselves
also you guys value your privacy a lot, which is definitely a double edged sword
but i met this cool old guy named Steve from chicago. we talked about music and life and shit since me and my bro brought a guitar
steve said that we are the kind of guys he would have met 40 years ago lol

Think there's a degree of optimism, both organic and forced through expectation. I'd say California and Hawaii is really the pinnacle of the latter.

As a Californian going to New York for the first time, I was surprised how way fewer people do the usual forced friendly small talk. I kinda like it though, pretending to be happy with other people seems to lead to actually being friendly with them to some extent. Some of it might seem super fake, but a lot of people are genuinely laidback and nice here.

Talking about Sacramento area though, can't comment on Southern California or even Bay Area people that much.

I've had the opposite experience in sacramento, most people seem to try and avoid random conversation and give clearly disinterested answers when I'm bored and decide to try and small talk in a public space. Bay area for the most part I can just talk some shit with random people on the street for a little while and it feels natural. I really like the mountain folk in the northern part of the state they're just god and freedom loving Americans.

I sort of feel like that’s a relatively recent development, don’t think it was like that more the fentanyl crisis. And especially a decade before that.

Depends on where they were from, etc., but a lot of the culture in America revolves around strictly impressionistic communication. Authentic self-expression and good-faith conversation is pretty rare here. The majority of Americans speak primarily to project a certain image about themselves, draw attention to it, and basically seek IRL likes.

I was a young adult when flip-phones were thought of as cutting-edge, and for about five years, you could not go out in public in this country without random faggots flipping their phone shut as loudly as possible, then subtly glancing around to see how many strangers noticed how busy and important they just made themselves look.
