They just started banning people over ordinary on-topic threads discussing shitcoins and pretended it was an issue. Maybe as some conspiracy to hide/push coins, but maybe just so they'd have a bullshit excuse for starting email verification later. Possibly a test run for wider site verification, or someone wanted 4chan to clamp down on crypto talk.
