He ran, swam and ocassionally did a few pushups and pullups yet had wider shoulders than practically all bodybuilders

Being "filled in", having a large ribcage, large muscular torso and strong core will make you look less wide shluldered even if you're big even among those that are extremely muscular - see strongmen vs bodybuilders(though bodybuilders don't even really "do" that look anymore)

I'm pretty sure my shoulders are even a bit wider than the guy on the left. Runs in the family. Also blessed with a lot of upper body strength. Took a year off of working out and still had a pretty nice physique and could do 12 wide grip pullups. It's nice to be in the wide shoulder gang.
