I finally realize what I saw after looking up ancient sketches of mythical creatures.
It was clearly a Sneed, perhaps even a baby Sneed (a Sneedling).
I thought they went extinct centuries ago, but it seems there are more in the rural midwest...

Be careful out there. Sneeds are not to be underestimated...
