Not quite, the outer layers are 80% silver sandwiching a core of something like 22.5% silver, so if melted together you'd get a 40% silver mix, there's no nickel in those halves

Massively, I'd think. If you had any debt though holy shit you could get rid of it quick. A sudden revaluation would probably act similarly to the stimmy checks. If everyone had 1oz gold (they don't, I know, just for sake of argument) then they'd suddenly have ~292k poofed into existence and a hell of a lot of that would immediately go into circulation. Lots of PM holders would certainly sell some of their stack and that would mean a fuckton more money chasing the same amount of goods.

i cant remember where i heard it, i think silver seeker's channel, he was talking about when silver spiked in the past and people were selling it to coin shops for under spot simply because they were able to take a good profit for it.

Last thread we briefly discussed public facing PM verification for the masses and someone brought up auto retailers being likely to if not guaranteed to verify PMs. I can see them also dealing in selling PMs and possibly provide fractional change service like how some LCS may allow you to trade 10 1toz pieces for 1 10toz price of silver.
The real question is, how will banks adapt to such a change when fiat is hyper-inflated?

Agreed man, I should've kept examples of old style bills like you before they were all replaced by those godawful series of 1996 abominations. Our current bills colored like monopoly money are still cucked but definitely better looking. I did save a cool 1934 $10 bill I got in change but don't have any old style higher denominations.

I can't resist an invitation to post my ancient Aztec artifacts and "coins" again, their monetary system was really interesting. That article is for normoids so it's not true that cacao beans were worth more than gold by weight or anything, but they were much more culturally and economically important to the Aztecs. Cacao beans were a pretty standard and ubiquitous currency through the 1500s, whereas gold was just ornamental/ceremonial. Back in the 1950s it was calculated that a single bean has the purchasing power and function of a 5c Nickel (probably 10x or more in today's USD) but you can't really get a 1:1 comparison between such different cultures and economies. This is an excellent reference point though:

This brings me to the indigenously smelted then hammer-formed copper axe and hoe/ulu knife shaped money, the latter called a tajadero:
>The copper tajadero (Spanish for chopping knife) was a form of money used in central Mexico and parts of Central America. Also known as Aztec hoe or axe money, this standardized, unstamped currency had a fixed worth of 8,000 cacao seeds – the other common unit of exchange in Mesoamerica.

Instead of gold being used for high value units of money as in the Old World, the Aztecs used these copper "coins" as a far more compact and less perishable store of wealth compared to cacao beans. I'd guess an Aztec chocobean weighed around 1 gram, so although not a convenient pocket-piece a tajadero was way easier to carry around than 8 kilograms of beenz.

Equivalent to 8,000 seeds, a tajadero had the rough purchasing power of $400 (in 1950s USD) and just 1 could supply your village with 80 turkeys for the annual feast. Impressive eh?

Thanks for humoring my autism anon, learning about how economic and monetary systems developed independently in various places is really interesting. The notion of using chocolate as currency is delightfully absurd to everyone baked in the mold of Western Civilization, but the way they navigated its perishability by using standardized and interchangeable tool-shaped "coins" as a concentrated store of wealth isn't so foreign. I figure there's an interesting reason why we see the independent evolution of what was accepted as a store of wealth in different cultures converge on metallic tool moneys, even with no known contact or cultural exchange it's strikingly similar to how money developed in East Asia, the European Bronze Age and elsewhere.

Gold Eagles are 90% gold, 1toz AGW(Actual Gold Weight), and therefore weigh more than 1toz. American Gold Buffalos are exactly 1toz of 24kt gold, but they're easier to ding and scratch. It was standard for silver bars called grzywna. It was used in Poland, Bohemia (modern Czech Republic) and Ruthenia (Ukraine, Belarus). Later they started adding cuts to mark the weight. Not a lot of them survived because they were later melted to make coins. The cut version is the most common on the collector market because it was in use up to 15th century in Lithuania (historic medieval Lithuania contained modern day Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine).

Many modern currencies were named after these. Modern Ukraine currency is hrywna which is grzywna in Ukrainian. In Latin, grzywna is marca. This was the common name of many European currencies, most notably German mark. There is also a theory that the name of ruble currency came from Russian word for cutting and it refers to cuts on grzywna.

I've seen a good number of those small thin silver ingots and chopped-off chunks for sale on eBay, being sold by metal-detectorists or small-scale dealers located in Ukraine, Poland and Russia IIRC. They usually say the silver pieces are "Viking" which I didn't believe, attributing things to the Vikings is simply a better way to advertise and sell artifacts than accurately attributing them the the more obscure and forgotten cultures who actually made the items. I never really understood who in fact did make and use those silver bars as money though, so you just solved lots of mysteries for me! I really appreciate it fren thank you, and if you have anything else you want to share I'd love to learn more, i can't get enough of this kind of knowledge.

I wasn't saying they're selling it as cheap scrap, the bars and cut fragments usually sell for multiples over melt value but unless they're special because of an interesting motif embossed from the mold or have incised decoration/graffiti they tend to be affordable.

Here's an example from a Ukrainian seller who tends to be honest and sell authentic items:

I haven't slurped too much online from venues other than eBay but this tasty pair of Arrowsmith (not arrowhead as per the boomer) 5" tall weighted sterling silver shakers just popped up on my radar for $15.90 total with tax. Arrowsmith silver tends to be pretty decent quality so I expect 50+ grams of sterling. Even at $600 silver there will still be clueless boomoids selling cheap so I suggest you git gud while it's still easy frens.

Yeah, it's not mine but I have one very similar to it. Most of them have a big premium but you can find good deals if you hunt long enough. I really enjoy holding older sterling items. Yeah I know that feel and it's a comfy one, got bankers boxes full of the stuff and keep buying more. One type of sterling I highly recommend is Norwegian (to a lesser extent UK) guilloche enamel silverware, the stuff is of the highest quality and very well finished and the different colors of enamel are often truly enthralling, greens and purples are my favorites. Many are gold plated over the sterling so tarnish won't be a concern. I fuggin' love this stuff man, they're like utilitarian gemstones.

Most antique silverware everywhere is retailed with premiums above the cheapest bullion, but if you learn your hallmarks and figure out how to avoid the professional dealers or greedy boomers and hunt for stuff being sold cheap by noobs or ignorant boomers you will have much more success. I've never handled any Polish silverware so ain't familiar offhand with the standard silver purities popular there, what fineness is the silver you just bought?

This unfortunately never happens in Poland. Boomers universally go crazy when they hear "silver". They still remember poor commie times when 1oz of silver was your monthly salary. So it goes other way around in Poland - uninformed boomers try to sell their silver for 5-10 times the spot. They are also exploited by companies that sell crappy silver pope medals at 150%+ premium.

I sometimes inform old people online that the actual spot price of silver is much lower and they are truly shocked and don't believe me. Even when I show them the online listings of 1oz generics. They refuse to accept the spot is so low and they say 1oz britannia or philharmonic is probably fake because it's too cheap.

I've bought several really cheap on eBay but to do it efficiently and weed out everything that everyone else can find it requires sophisticated keyword and filtering strategies. You'd probably have better luck monitoring www.estatesales.net for local in-person estate sales in your area and then show up before the doors open on the 1st day so you're among the first people allowed inside. I slurped this box of sterling for $50 at a productive estate sale, got lots of other sterling there so IIRC I paid $133 for close to 2 kilos and also got some scrap gold, awesome valuable antiques, fossils and Indian artifacts cheap, that was a fun sale.

Every weekend there are garage sales around me but everyone knows what they have so its always a couple bucks above spot price. These people in the next neighborhood over had a sigma but they were trying to sell buffaloes, and krugs for 38 bucks. With respect to the availability of cheapies at sales I've basically only heard 2 takes, your relatively common perspective and then the view of more experienced bargain hunters who find the effort worthwhile and rewarding. I've done well at IRL sales (estate sales are consistently the best for me) in every state I've been in, from the Rockies to the Chesapeake Bay, so I really don't think anons who lament the perceived barrenness of their locations are entirely accurate; they probably just show up too late or don't really have sufficient experience to recognize enough of the good stuff to make it viable. Not criticizing you or anyone else who has tried looking, but I'd bet you a kilo that if you adjusted your strategy and were an early-bird you'd catch way more worms. I understand that it's hard to believe or accept without past experience, successes and observations about the idiosyncrasies of different dealers/estate liquidators and understanding of the patterns and dynamics of your local scene to draw from but I'm confident that almost anyone can bank some good scores if they adjust their approach a bit.

Trying my best to fill this box with Germania bars. Wanted to fill it with 250 gram bars but bullion dealers are running out of stock, the ones that don't overcharge anyway. It contains 69.7 standard ounces of .800, or about 1,576 grams of pure silver worth $1,570. They're asking just $850+shipping (and tax) so for me it would cost $925 total, which is more than $600 below melt value.

In case you're wondering why I'm not getting it since $18.25/Troy ounce is clearly lucrative at $31 silver, I prefer slurping at a rather lower price and figure letting a scrap-curious fren get their feet wet and either flip it to a refinery for ~$28/ozt asw or keep it to use personally is better for our cause than making a quick ~$500.

Yeah, the more i think about it, the more sus (susser?) i find his obsession for hand rubbing dealer-approved-only PMs. Most frens don't stack anything but bars/1oz coins, but i believe it's mostly out of ignorance for existing alternatives, and maybe a bit of fear (both of fakes but also perceived lack of liquidity). Ofc bars and coins are great, but they are getting really expensive.

That's thanks to you we are aware others options exist. Personally it didn't even cross my mind even once to go after silverware, simply because i've never seen any in my life, nor do i know anybody who own silverware. When something is so foreign to you it's not by choice you aren't alternative-stacking. And most of us here are in this situation.

All you propose is an alternative, and it's really bizarre someone would be so angry at more options being given to the pmg bros. Having more choice is having more power, why would a (((fellow stacker))) refuse anons to have this choice?

Thank you for posting this, it was very kind of you. for me it came to $956 so it's still a near $600 discount on silver. hell by this time next month it could be a $1000 discount with the way silver has been moving.

What scrapchad isn't telling you is that you'll only get maybe 80% of spot selling directly to a refinery for 800 silver, and you likely need a business license for them to do business with you(for taxes). Otherwise you're looking at maybe 60% to a scrapper on a private sale that they will then flip and pay taxes on. There's nothing bad about the deal. These sorts of oppurtunities for arbitrage are all over the internet. People make their living doing this. Here's a scrapper who is finding it harder and harder to find deals and more and more millenials get into gold and silver.

Yes on all counts, the hallmarks are legit old German .800 and Etsy definitely has protections too.

I'm sure that buying silver at such a discount feels weird, in the "must be too good to be true" territory, but half the time that's just a noob talking themselves out of a deal that a pro will slurp immediately afterwards.

A few points: There are far fewer scrappers looking on Etsy. The item wasn't normal american .925, so being unfamiliar .800 scares away lots of what minimal competition is there to begin with. The set was only put on sale late last night after boomer bedtimes and you slurped before they awoke so your timing was good too. If there are any particular points or questions you want to drill down on I'd be happy to explain and elaborate more.

And welcome to the cheapies club fren! I'd love to see your own pics of the set when it arrives, those scarce big solid silver knives kinda make me jelly but I'm very happy a deserving anon got the set, I really don't need another one lol.

Picrel is straight from the refinery's site, for 10-100oz you get 90% and above 100oz you get 92% of spot price. Only at under .700 purity do they discount the payout. And literally anyone can call up or walk in like me without giving a driver's license let alone a business license like our resident retard claims.

The baseline worst-case reference price I use to determine viability of a deal is the amount I'd get if I had to sell a load of scrap for cash that day, so for your load of .800 the minimum value is 90% of its melt price of $1616 (already nice gains since I posted!) or about $1,454, you're $500+ in profit already fren.

I've only ever had them refine and manufacture bullion bars for me though, never sold a dime of silver to them, but the manufacturing fee is $1-2 per ounce (depending on the type of bar) which i have them deduct from the my silver, so if you wanted bullion returned instead of cash you'd expect maybe around 85-88% of your total silver returned as bullion. Pic is an example of a batch I got back from them. Their bullion commands great premiums though, so don't let their modest fee scare you because you receive way more value than if you got back the same weight of generic buffalos or Silvertowne bars.

Sounds about right, once you get a taste for cheapies and if you have a knack for it like a few anons here you'll wonder why you ever let yourself get chained to retail spot+premiums, it's a very liberating and comfy feel to always be in profit.

That's one of my smaller hauls lol, I've done several like picrel where I got over 300oz of bullion returned. They refine gold jewelry into awesome 1/10oz rounds too, I mostly focus on silver but if you prefer gold cheapies they got you covered, I really like those little golbs
