It's not just about the commute, most people would rather live like sardines, jammed up each other's ass, being harassed by niggers, if it means they're within walking distance of groceries. Personally, the many advantages of the seclusion are worth driving an hour to work, or even for groceries. More than worth it. I guess I'm in a small minority of humanity since the houses are super cheap, to my benefit I suppose.
