I went to a chain restaurant today with the family, and after a positive interaction with the server, I left her my phone number. I know, cringe af but I suck at social cues and I'm a loser so just be happy I'm trying. After we left, I started getting texts from another employee pretending to be her, and requesting money. I called him out and he confessed that she handed the number out to the kitchen.

I've begun the process of filing charges for identity fraud or whatever. The police agree that it's not okay, and are reaching out to everyone involved. Did I go too far in my response? I'm pretty humiliated and he did genuinely seem to want me to send him money. I've been rejected before, but this is a whole different level. I don't want to sign his number up for a bunch of calls or do anything unethical like that. I just want him to not kick the next guy when he's down, so maybe this will do that? Could I have done something differently?
