This was Jesus telling us to engage in passive resistance. If a Roman citizen hit you twice it was assault and you can defend yourself.
Jesus literally let his disciples carry military weapons and he told them to go buy a sword etc.
Nothing in the NT implies we can't defend ourselves with deadly force. Just because the disciples chose not to does not mean we have to do the same. They also chose not to get married but the NT clearly says that it's ok to get married and even commands church leadership to get married. So it's a proven fact we don't have to follow their examples 100%.
